Error codes per brand
Samsung has the most verified codes in the corpus with 84 (19.2%), the only brand covered in both markets, followed by LG (73) and Whirlpool (41). 293 codes (66.9%) are US-market and 145 (33.1%) UK-market; 54.6% of all codes were derived from a manufacturer listing, the rest from a repair-reference listing.

One row per error code, unique on (brand, market, appliance type, code): the same code string in the US and UK lists is two records. Every code was re-derived from one of 30 fetched source listings (a manufacturer support page or a disclosed repair reference); codes whose source stated no meaning were dropped, and brand pairs under 10 verified codes were dropped rather than padded.
Error codes per appliance type
Washers account for 57.1% of the corpus (250 codes), followed by dishwashers (73, 16.7%) and oven / ranges (45, 10.3%). The 26 brand-market-type pairs range from 27 codes (Miele UK washer) down to 10, the inclusion floor.

Coverage follows what each brand publishes per market and appliance type; a dash means the pair is not in the corpus, not that the brand has no such codes. Denominator for every share: 438 codes.
The most common fault categories
The largest fault category is sensor, 62 of 438 codes (14.2%), followed by water supply (48, 11.0%) and motor (45, 10.3%). The leading category differs by appliance: washers motor (36 of 250); dishwashers drainage / water supply (12 of 73); oven / ranges sensor (13 of 45); dryers ventilation (8 of 40); refrigerators fan / sensor (6 of 30).

cause_category is a controlled label assigned per code from the source's stated meaning (23 values); each code carries exactly one. Two categories are shown where they tie for first place. Categories describe what the code reports, not the confirmed root cause.
How many codes stop the appliance
Of the 410 codes with a severity class, 32.7% are stop failure (the appliance halts until the fault clears), 60.0% degraded and 7.3% informational. 28 codes carry no severity and are excluded. Among categories with at least 10 classified codes, drainage has the highest stop-failure share (84.4%) and sensor the lowest (0.0%).

severity is assigned from the source's description of the appliance's behaviour when the code shows: stop failure, degraded operation or an informational message. Categories with fewer than 10 classified codes are left out of the share table.
Which components the codes point to
The control board is the component most often named, by 46 codes (10.5%), ahead of the drain pump (28) and the water inlet valve (28). 147 distinct components are named across the corpus.

How much of the repair work is DIY
247 of 438 codes (56.4%) carry at least one ranked repair procedure, 288 in all. 50.3% of procedures are easy and 23.6% professional only; looking at the first-ranked procedure per code, 58.7% are easy and 19.0% professional only. 31 procedures consist of requesting professional service. The other 191 codes (140 washer, 51 dishwasher) come from sources that state no repair and carry none.

Procedures are ranked per code with a stated basis: 220 manufacturer first (76.4%), 68 cost ascending (23.6%); a rank without evidence never ships. diy_difficulty is assigned per procedure (easy, moderate, advanced, professional only). The first-ranked table counts rank-1 procedures by the appliance type of their code.
Method, reuse and citation
- Source. The full ApplianceDB corpus retrieved 2026-07-16: 438 codes and 288 procedures, each re-derived from one of 30 fetched manufacturer support pages or disclosed repair references, never from model memory; meanings and steps are original paraphrase. Every row keeps its source tier and URL; see Sources and the data dictionary.
- Nothing is padded. Codes whose source states no meaning were dropped, brand pairs under 10 verified codes were dropped, codes whose source lists no repair carry none, and codes without a severity class are excluded from the severity shares. Each section states its denominator.
- Left out on purpose. Parts prices (17 priced OEM parts, 20 procedures with a cost) and labor minutes (0 populated) are too few to summarise; they stay row-level fields in the dataset.
- Refresh. ApplianceDB is curated; this page and its charts are regenerated with each corpus edition, so figures move. Cite the snapshot date.
